Instead, to expand the leather, wrap the knife in plastic wrap a few times, apply some water to the inside of the case to soften the leather, gently insert the knife and leave it to dry. This will then dry and harden in the enlarged state and when you take the plastic wrap off the knife should be smaller than the case and it will go in and out easier.
